What's unique about a Post Office Box ?
Why a post office box?

I couldn't resist the "shed" that lies on Route 49 in Marshall Gold Discovery Historical State Park, set on the American River. After entering a few years ago, I couldn't resist posessing one rarely available post office box at the site.

The river runs behind the postal shed and its adjacent old iron (ferrier's) shop. There, just beyond those trees.

Coloma, once called "Culloma", was the Sierran hub of California's gold rush history.

Coloma's residential town is a very tiny one, and fits well with the old Sutter's Mill and Park surrounds.

My now necessary small mile's trip to the historical post office, to check mail, grabs me every time. It's a beautiful place.

Coloma's Post Office was established on November 8, 1849. Its site used to stand across the street but was moved, after a year, to its current spot, as seen here. ("click" to read more about the region's history and attractions.)
