| Passing Through the Gold Country |
Route 49 passes right through the oak woodland foothill forests, going south parallel to the Sierra Nevada crest. It is the state-long landmark and historical review of the 1800's influx of ages, cultures, nationalities, trades, religions and more into California; a 1 1/2 century time-wedge within California's long native American and Spanish/Mexican history. It passes through several unique towns.
Notably, apart from a very few residences (meaning you can count them on hands and toes), a church, old melodrama theater, trading post, two coffee shops and blacksmith's shop, the town of Coloma is mostly a California State Park focused on several cultural histories and natural history.
While we don't live in Coloma, we've managed to obtain one of the few available post office boxes there at the Coloma Post Office on the basis of fascination and pleasure of being close by, not to mention wading and rafting in the American River.
Also you will find links to the Park's website, the River Conservancy website, and Gold Panning websites...of Coloma, Placerville... El Dorado County in General if you click here. The pictures link directly to the State Park.
